Leah Wulfman
Leah Wulfman is an Assistant Professor in the School of Interior Architecture at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, and a Carrier Bag architect, educator, game designer, digital puppeteer, and occasional writer. Trained as an architect, Wulfman assembles hybrid virtual and physical spaces to prototype new relationships with technology and nature, while challenging normative ideologies so often reinforced through architecture and technology. Their mixed reality installations foreground the material conditions underlying digital environments, while their broader research and design practice develops hybrid environments, interactions, materials, and alternative controllers. Wulfman mobilizes play and simulation to render entanglements of social, material, and ecological systems tangible through embodied experience.
Central to Wulfman’s practice are nonnormative uses and playful misuses of technology through embodied physicality. Grounded in play and performativity, their work pairs game engine interactions and digital twins with their most physical, material, and ludic counterparts. These mixed reality ecologies and interactions are informed by disability, trans, and queer embodied practices and politics, operating as lenses through which to reconfigure and recontextualize spatial and temporal orientations within architectural discourse beyond the normate.
Wulfman holds a Bachelor of Architecture from Carnegie Mellon University and a Master of Science in Worldbuilding from SCI-Arc’s Fiction and Entertainment Program. They have taught at numerous institutions across the United States, including ArtCenter’s Media Design Practices Graduate Program, the IDEAS Program at UCLA Architecture and Urban Design, the University of Utah’s Multi-Disciplinary Design Program, SCI-Arc, the School of Architecture at Taliesin, and the University of Michigan’s Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning.
Wulfman will present their work as part of Earth Craft, the 2027 United States Pavilion at the Venice Architecture Biennale. They are the recipient of a United States Artists Fellowship (2025, $50,000), the Architectural League Prize for Young Architects + Designers (2024), and were nominated for the Emerging Designer category of Cooper Hewitt’s 2025 National Design Awards. Their work has been exhibited internationally at institutions and events including the MAK Museum Vienna, Carnegie Museum of Art, the Tbilisi and Buenos Aires Architecture Biennials, Materials & Applications, and The FiDi Arsenale. Their writing and research have also appeared in peer-reviewed publications, including recent contributions to Architecture and Videogames: Intersecting Worlds (Routledge, 2025) and Architecture as Environmental Media: Rendering the Planetary(Routledge, 2026).
