Request Summary: Paracetamol and ibuprofen.

Request Category: Companies

Question Number 1:
This is an information request relating to NHS Trusts buying and supplying Paracetamol and ibuprofen.

Please include the following information for the financial years 2022/23, 2023/24 and 2024/25:

The total number of individual patients to whom paracetamol and ibuprofen were prescribed by your Trust annually.

Answer To Question 1:
It is not possible to answer this as both items in all forms are supplied as stock rather than on individual basis. Information would need to be pulled from prescribing information on EPMA, and prior to this implementations this would not be able to be answered.  Data warehouse for EPMA may be able to provide some information from when EPMA was fully implemented.

Information from Data Warehouse EPMA tables is only available from 2023/24.

Total Unique Patients Prescribed Paracetamol or Ibuprofen
2023/24 = 13,480
2024/25 = 17,228

Total Spells/Admissions where Paracetamol or Ibuprofen prescribed
2023/24 = 16,678
2024/25 = 21,617

Question Number 2:
The total amount spent by your Trust on supplying prescribed paracetamol and Ibuprofen in each of those financial years

Answer To Question 2:
To complete this each pack size, strength and form of both items would need to have data pulled month by month for the given years, this would take over 18 hours of work to complete and therefore we are unable to answer.

Question Number 3:
If available, a breakdown of the form in which paracetamol was prescribed (e.g., tablets, capsules, liquid suspension, etc.) and associated costs for each form.

Answer To Question 3:
Unable to supply this information as all paracetamol and ibuprofen products are on specific NHS contracting and thus the pricing can not be shared outside the NHS.

Question Number 4:
What are the specific conditions which qualify a patient to be prescribed paracetamol or ibuprofen?

Or what is your general policy for qualifying a prescription for paracetamol or ibuprofen?

Answer To Question 4:
Not able to answer this as it depends on various factors and is dependant on department and prescriber. Would be used for pain or pyrexia.
